Packing

The art of packing light

One carry-on, any trip - the system that makes it repeatable.

The travelers who glide past the baggage carousel are not lucky. They run a system. Here is the one that fits a week - sometimes two - into a single carry-on, every time.

Start from the trip, not the closet

Most over-packing happens because we pack for who we might be, not who we'll be. Begin by writing down what you'll actually do each day: meetings, hikes, dinners, beach. Pack for those activities and nothing else. A destination-aware checklist makes this far faster, because it already accounts for climate, season and the kind of trip you're taking.

The capsule wardrobe rule

Choose a two-color base - say navy and grey - so every top works with every bottom. Then count in outfits, not items.

  • Tops: 4 to 5, layerable
  • Bottoms: 2 to 3
  • One warm layer and one packable rain shell
  • Shoes: 2 pairs maximum - wear the bulkier pair on the plane
  • Underwear and socks for 5 days, then do laundry

Roll, compress, and zone

Roll soft items to save space and reduce creasing. Use two or three packing cubes to create zones - clothing, tech, toiletries - so security checks and morning routines never become an unpacking explosion.

The 3-1-1 reality of liquids

Carry-on liquids must usually be in containers of 100 ml or less, all fitting in one clear quart-size bag. Decant your shampoo and buy the rest at the destination. Solid alternatives - bar soap, shampoo bars, solid sunscreen - sidestep the rule entirely.

Pack the "what if" items wisely

You do not need to plan for every emergency, but a few small items earn their space: a universal adapter, a spare phone cable, a few zip bags, basic medication and copies of key documents. Everything else can usually be bought locally if you truly need it.

The final test

Lay everything out, then remove three things. If you don't miss them by day two, your system is working. Pack light, move freely, and spend your energy on the trip instead of your luggage.
